our house in the bay area

I have mentioned before our previous house in the Bay Area.

It was our first house, and we lived there for 13 years. We got married, we brought home two babies, and we completely renovated it from top to bottom. Unfortunately, I don't have any 'Before' photos because it was before the digital age. (That statement officially makes me feel old.)

The entire time we lived there, we knew that we would eventually sell it. We never, ever intended for it to be our 'forever' home.

Here it is. The home we left behind.

No words can explain how much I miss this tub!

(Kid's rooms and office not pictured.)

To be honest, it was *interesting* going back through these photos. No part of me regrets selling this house and moving to the central coast. I believe that we are meant to be here and that our kids are meant to grow up here. (In no means does that convey how badly I miss my family and my girlfriends.)

Tell me: Are you currently living in your 'forever' home or do *know* that you're going to sell it eventually?

  1. I love that you've found the place that 'you're meant to be in' .....it's something that I'm still searching for, but hopefully will find one day.

  2. The home is beautiful. I love all the cabinetry in the kitchen and the bathroom is awesome - that tub and vanity are speaking to me. I totally understand what you mean about knowing something isn't your forever home.

  3. That house had a nice calm feel to it. We sold our first townhouse 1.5 years ago as it did not suit or life with kids.
I really like the flow of our house now and how we are slowly getting it to the style we want. It's a little on the small side but it's in our perfect neighborhood. My hubby predicts that I'll want to sell once we are done with all our projects...I don't know, I think I'd miss it. I am known to want radical changes every once in a while...

  4. The house you sold is beautiful and very well done (great job!) but much more traditional than I think you have grown into (from reading your posts). We moved into a house we thought we would live in for about 5 years and now, 24 years later, we are still here. We have added on twice and remodeled almost every square inch. But today, even though I love this house, I would love to move to something new, start fresh and design something more inline with who I am today ... maybe something with a Spanish architecture or a bungalow near the beach.
But I could not give up this house (too many memories!) ;) My hope, is that someday my grown daughter (one of them) will live here with their family and I will move to something new.
Anyway what I really wanted to tell you is thank you so much for you nice comments on my post today ... very appreciated!!! xo Sherri

  5. Your house was gorgeous, you did a beautiful job renovating it! We are definitely not in our forever home. Being military who knows when we will finally be able to settle down into a home we would love forever. I don't know if I believe in forever homes. My parent's moved a lot when I was younger (always in the same city). My dad had a love of renovating and my mom was a Realtor, this ='s a lot of moves :). I like moving on, having a chance to renovate and live in different homes. I feel it is fun to fix it up, appreciate it and leave it for someone else to enjoy.

  6. Your 1st home is just lovely!!! It feels so pen and pretty :)

Right now we are living in our 1st home and can see us moving into a larger home in the future, but not too much bigger a family room would be nice! :)

  8. your bay area home was so beautiful! i love the bathrooms and how much storage you had in the kitchen. and your new home will be too, just different. it's fun to see our tastes change as we change. i used to be totally country with lots of checks and distressed furniture. my decor has simplified as my life has gotten more complicated. even though i grew up in one town, we moved from house to house every 5 years. my dad bought homes as investments, not a place to put down roots. so i hope we can make the move "up" someday, with some land and more room for friends and family to stay.

  9. Your home was gorgeous! It must have been kind of bittersweet to leave it behind even if you knew it would never be your "forever" home. My husband and I call our old house our "practice" house. Sometimes I wonder if the new owner has noticed any of our DIY blunders :)

  10. What a great house. I totally understand what you're saying. We moved from Toronto to Vancouver and I completely miss our old house and all our friends and family. At the same time, our kids have never been happier and it's onward and upward.

  11. Second the "practice house" comment -- our last place (a 1200 sq. ft. condo) was where we learned to tile, paint, and do all of the things we don't really have to do now that we ended up building new. (Too bad we didn't get to practice any landscaping....) But yes, now we're in our pretty-much-forever-they're-gonna-have-to-drag-me-from-it-kicking-and-screaming house.

Karen, your old place was beautiful! It makes me even more excited to see how the new place turns out. (BTW, have you thought about where the blog is headed once the house is finished? That's been a big challenge for me.)

  12. @ Devon~
As for the future of this blog... let's just say that I am assuming that it will take us a *while* to trim every piece out and finish every detail.

And who knows? Maybe then we'll start renovating the Airstream?! ha ha

  13. Your home was beautiful! At one point, I thought the house we're currently in would be our forever house. But, now that we're nearing the renovation end of the road (after a huge kitchen remodel), we might change our minds. There's something we just love about renovating a house that I don't know if we'll be able to sit and enjoy the work without having something to do next. We'll see though. :)

  14. Gorgeous house! What is the exterior paint color? We are about to paint our house and are having a really difficult time finding a color that we agree on. This color is so pretty. Please let me know if you remember the name of it.
