#1 tip for painting stripes

In the last few weeks, I've learned a thing or two about painting stripes. I'm no expert, but I have developed a strong opinion about what works and what doesn't work.

The kind of tape you use does not matter. I used Frog Tape, supposedly known for preventing seepage. Yeah, right...

#1 Tip for preventing seepage: Seal your tape with paint.

To prevent seepage, seal your tape with the background paint color. I learned about this trick from House Bella. Unfortunately, I didn't know if I should believe this tip or not. Therefore, I sealed the tape on one wall, and I didn't seal the tape on another wall.

Since pictures are worth a thousand walls, let me show you how the trick worked.

The results of tape that had been sealed.

The results of tape that was not sealed.

I learned the hard way. Hopefully, you won't have to. Seal your tape!

***You can see photos of the finished stripes here.

  1. I saw House Bella's wall, thought it looked great, and filed this tip away under "maybe sometime I'll try it." But now it's going in the "must do" category. The photos really do tell the story. Thank you for doing the experiment so I don't feel like I have to! :)

  2. I still love this wall you did. :)

That is a great tip. I have always been scared of a project like this because when you watch the TV design shows they pull off the tape and act like it looks amazing only if you look closer you see the seepage.

  6. Thanks for stopping by my blog to say hi! I just wanted to tell you that I'm in the process of doing a tape-painting experiment and I have the same stupid textured walls you do! So annoying!! I think Frog Tape is waaaay overrated! We just used regular ol' blue painter's tape a few years ago when we did stripes in our laundry room and sealed it with the background color and had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever! I think we're going back to blue tape after our disastrous experiment a few days ago....sheesh!
